LOS ANGELES - Tanya White had a match-high 16 kills while Luana Cavalcanti added 10 kills on 22 swings as 19th-ranked Cal State L.A. remained perfect on the season with a 30-28, 30-16, 30-16 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday night in the Eagles Nest.
Cal State L.A. improves to 11-0, 3-0 CCAA, while CSUDH falls to 3-5, 0-3 CCAA.
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out on fire at the start of the match, leading nearly the entire first game as the Golden Eagles struggled to gain any momentum. CSULA led 1-0 on a kill by Melissa Zapiain, but would not lead again until another Zapiain kill gave the Golden Eagles a 25-24 lead. In the middle of that span, CSUDH led by as many as seven points at 21-14 before Cal State L.A. battled back. A kill by White on game point gave Cal State L.A. a 30-28 comeback win in game one.
CSULA dominated the final two games as the visiting Toros combined to hit in negative numbers for games two and three. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in game two as CSUDH committed four-straight errors. CSUDH closed to within four points at 13-9, but three-straight CSUDH errors quickly pushed Cal State L.A.'s lead back to seven points at 16-9. Airess Padda (Stockton, CA/Bear Creek) ended game two with a kill down the middle as CSULA earned a 30-16 decision.
Game three was close in the early going before Cal State L.A. went on a 9-0 run, including two service aces by Shannon Johnson, to take a 14-4 lead. The visiting Toros never closed within more than eight points the rest of the way as Cal State L.A. ended the match on a Zapiain kill for a 30-16 win in game three and a sweep of the match.
White and Cavalcanti paced CSULA in kills while teammate Ashley Hardwick led all players with 15 digs from her libero position.
Timary More paced CSUDH with 12 kills.
CSUDH's volleyball team travels to Bakersfield Saturday night to take on the Roadrunners. First serve is 3:00 p.m.
