ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Genny Anderson went for 17 points and Jessica Jennings had 14 to lead Sonoma State to a big 72-58 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA women's basketball action Saturday night in Rohnert Park.
The win gives SSU a 2-0 start to the conference season. They are 4-1 overall as they head back into non-conference play next weekend. The Toros picked up their first loss, falling to 2-1, 1-1 CCAA.
After the lead vaulted back and forth for the first eight minutes, the Seawolves took a lead at 11-10 with 11:33 to go and would not trail the rest of the way. Though the Toros got the margin to one at times in the first half, SSU would go on a 9-4 run to close the half and head into the break up 34-25.
Early in the second half, Cal State Dominguez Hills cut the lead to six at 41-35 with 14:03 remaining, but SSU went on an 10-0 run and put the game out of reach. The advantage got as big as 22 before the Toros chopped it down to 14 at the end of the game.
It was the second straight team-leading scoring performance for Anderson as she had 12 last night in a win over Cal Poly Pomona.
Jennings took a nasty fall in the second half, but returned and finished with 14, tying her highest output of the season. Freshman Heidi Mertle had five rebounds to lead SSU.
Tameka Blue was the leading scorer for CSUDH, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She also had four rebounds and four assists.
The women's next outing will be Wednesday when the team hosts Azusa Pacific. Tip is 6:00 p.m.
