San Francisco, Calif.--- The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (2-0, 1-0 CCAA) defeated the San Francisco State University Gators 72-68 this evening in both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener at SF State's Main Gymnasium.
The Toros started the game on a 7-0 in the first 1:30. SF State went on an 8-0 run in the next two minutes of its own to take its first lead at the 16:29 mark on a made tip-in by Chloe Grimm.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took a double digit lead with 6:57 to go in the half as the Toros outscored the Gators 18-7 to take a 25-15 lead. CSUDH increased that to 12 (29-17) with 5:34 to go, but the Gators finished the half on an 18-5 run to take a 35-34 lead into half-time.
SF State increased its half-time lead to six (46-40) in the first five minutes of the second half. The Gators had their lead trimmed to 48-47 with 12:23 to go, but built it back to six (53-47) at the 9:07 mark. Alana Bailey tied the game at 53-53 for the Toros to cap a 6-0 run for them with 8:11 to go. The game went back and forth the next three minutes.
The Gators took their final lead of the game on a three-pointer by Bobbie Waldon with 5:34 to go to give SF State a 64-62 lead.
The Toros reclaimed the lead on the next possession on a three by Tameka Blue to give CSUDH a 65-64 lead with 4:38 left in regulation. Bailey gave CSUDH a 67-64 advantage with 2:25 to go, but Krystal Mays cut that lead back to one on a jumper with 1:24 to go.
CSUDH's Blue gave the Toros a three-point lead with 1:13 left on a lay-up, but once again the Gators cut the lead to one with 50 seconds left on two free throws by Grimm. The Toros scored the games' final three points as they connected on three of four of their attempts from the charity stripe to give them the 72-68 CCAA victory.
Blue finished with a game high 20 points and 8 assists while Brittney Blankenship added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Toros. Alana Bailey chipped in 18 points for CSUDH.
SF State (2-2, 0-1 CCAA) was led by Farryn Lewis' 15 points while Waldon added 13 and Grimm chipped in 10.
The Toros will return to action Saturday night when they visit Sonoma State.
