Carson, CA - The Toros trio of B's proved too much for Biola as Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS), Alana Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS), and Brittney Blankenship (Palmdale, CA/Palmdale HS) scored 25, 22, and 13 points respectively to contribute in the 95-73 women's basketball win over the Eagles Friday night.. With the win the Toros improve to 4-2 on the season, while Biola drops to 1-4.
The Toros offense would come out locked and loaded, nailing their first six shots including a pair of three pointers by Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS) to build an early 14-9 lead. Biola would cut the lead to three after a three by Crystal Duncan, however, the Toros offense would press the Eagles defense and extend their lead. The Toros lead would reach 10 on a three by Blue off a pass from Liang with a little over 12 minutes left in the half.
The Toros offense would then hit a rough patch that would continue over the next five minutes, only hitting two of their next 10 shots, while Biola would use a pair of jumpers by Megann Alberts to come within four. With the Eagles starting to make a run, Alan Bailey would step it up, first hitting a pair of free-throws, and then three jumpers in a row to push the Toros lead up to eight points with a little over two minutes left. Not wanting to be out done by her teammate, Blue would score six straight points at the end of the half to help the Toros go into the locker room with a 45-36 advantage.
Both teams shot well in the first half, with the Toros nailing 50% of their shots and Biola shooting 44.1% from the floor.
Blue would come out of the locker room and pick up right where she left off, hitting a three to kick off the Toros offense in the second half. With a conformable lead the Toros would not let up on the Eagles, keeping the offense rolling and slowly extending their lead. CSUDH would push their lead to 25 after an 11-0 run capped off by a three by Adiana Vega-Howard (Covina, CA/Northview HS) with nine and a half minutes left. CSUDH would maintain at least a 20-point lead for almost the entire time the rest of the second half.
For the second game in a row the Toros were able to give their young bench some much need minutes and experience. In all, the Toros would get their entire roster into the game, 15 different players saw action.
Despite the lopsided victory, both teams would shoot very well in the game, with the Toros shooting 52.1% from the floor and Biola shooting 41.8%.
Duncan led Biola with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Linda Ogugua's chipped in a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Other Toros contributing to the win were Liang with eight points and five assists, and Michelle Kribell (Buena Park, CA/Western HS) with eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots.
The Toros will be in action tomorrow night, as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville, tip-off at 5:30pm.
