Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Timary More (Torrance, CA/El Camino CC) led the Toros with 11 kills and a .455 hitting percentage, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona used a .268 to .092 hitting percentage advantage to swept the Toros 25-30, 17-30, 21-30. With the loss the Toros fall to 6-16, 2-14 CCAA and Pomona improves to 22-2, 14-2 CCAA.
Game one started with the Toros coming out stiff and falling behind early. The Toros would battle back and tie the game at 6-6 on a kill by More. The Toros would go on to gain a 9-6 advantage on back-to-back kills by Denise Herrera (El Monte, CA/ELAC) and another kill by More. The two teams battled with Pomona eventually tying the game at 13-13 on multiple errors by the Toros. From that point on the visiting Broncos would take command of the game behind Allison Anderson and Kellie Francis with 5 and 4 kills respectively.
In game two the Broncos would not let the Toros offense gain any momentum, as Cal State Dominguez Hills was out hit .250 to -.047. After falling behind 8-14 the Toros began to show some life and closed the gap to 11-14 behind two kills by Courtney Spainhour (Redondo Beach, CA/El Camino CC) and a solo block by Nicole Hoffman (Clovis, CA/Fresno CC). But once again multiple errors slowed the Toros charged and three straight kills by Francis gave the visiting Broncos a commanding 22-12 lead. The Toros would never get any closer for the rest of the match.
In game three the two teams fought back and forth for much of the beginning with neither team being able to pull away and were knotted at 8-8. Pomona would build a five point lead at 10-15 on a pair of kills by Vanessa Williams, but the Toros would come charging back and get to with one at 17-18 on kills by Spainhour and Herrera. However the Broncos would not let the Toros comeback be successful as they went on a 12-4 run the rest of the game.
The Toros conclude their regular season next weekend hosting perennial powers Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, followed by UC San Diego the next night. On Saturday, CSUDH will honor its lone senior Sylvia Bonilla (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) from the 2005 volleyball team in a pre-match ceremony.
