Toros Volleyball Swept by No. 18-Ranked UC San Diego, 3-0

Spainhour Leads Toros with Game High 13 Kills

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Courtney Spainhour (Redondo Beach, CA/El Camino CC) tallied a game high 13 kills, but it was not enough to over come the Tritons .330 to .134 hitting advantage as they swept the Toros 30-27, 30-21, 30-18. With the loss the Toros end their 2005 season with a record of 6-20, 2-16 CCAA, and UCSD improves to 19-8, 11-7 CCAA.

The Toros would come out in game one ready to put up a fight. CSUDH would build a five point lead to make it 10-5 behind two services aces by Maria Serrano (Lakewood, CA/Cerritos CC) and some errors by UCSD. The Toros would continue to push the No. 18 ranked Tritons making go almost point for point. The Toros lead would stay above three until the Tritons could capitalize on an attack error to cut the to 20-18. UCSD would tie the score at 22-22 on a service ace by Kristin Halvorsen. UCSD would build momentum after two service aces by Kimberly Carpenter to take the lead and eventually win 30-27.

With a narrow loss in game one the Toros started quickly getting an early advantage. Behind five early kills by Denise Herrera (South El Monte, CA/ELAC) the Toros would build a small 9-7 lead. UCSD would not let the quick start by Toros get too our of hand. They would tie the game at 16-16, and then begin to pull away behind a tough jump serve by Rebecca Bailey to build a 23-17 lead. UCSD would continue to put the pressure on the Toros for the rest of the match, and would win 30-21.

The Tritons came out in game three wanting to put the Toros away quickly. They used a balanced offensive attack to build a 10-5 lead. Toros would respond after using a service ace by Serrano and a kills by Timary More (Torrance, CA/El Camino CC) and Spainhour come with one at 11-10. However, the visiting Tritons would not let the Toros get any closer for the rest of the match and close them out on a 19-8 run.

UCSD was offensively by Nicole Courtney and Amber Ries with 12 and 9 kills respectively. Libero Laura Watkins would picked up 12 digs for game high honors.

Senior Toro Libero Sylvia Bonilla (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) would end her career with 11 digs. Bringing her four-year total to 898, placing alone in third place in the CSUDH record books. Spainhour would also ink her name in the Toro record book with a season total of 994 attack attempts, placing her tenth all-time.
