Grand Canyon Forces Fifth Game, Then Takes Match Over Toros

Phoenix, AZ—Grand Canyon University (10-12) played one of the most exciting matches of the season as they battled to force a deciding 5th game defeating CS Dominguez Hills (4-11) three games to two (27-30, 30-24, 26-30, 30-22, 15-12) on Friday night at Antelope Gymnasium.

These two teams battled all night much like their September 6th match in Carson, California which also went 5 games. GCU bounced back after dropping game one to take game two before CS Dominguez Hills capitalized on 'Lopes errors to stack themselves to a 2-1 game lead.

Behind the offense of junior, Tonya Rooth and Sophomore, Ashley Bright GCU came storming back to force a fifth game. Senior, Sonia Morales-Jones. After falling behind 6-2 the 'Lopes stormed back to steal the final game and push their record to (10-12).

Rooth led the way with 14 kills and 5 blocks while Jones added 11 kills and Bright and Emily Thomson chipped in 9 kills. Megan Taylor set the table for the 'Lopes with 42 assists and 7 kills of her own.

Courtney Spainhour led the Toros with 18 kills while Timary More added 15 kills in the losing cause. Amber Harder set a strong offensive performance with 45 assists while earning 2 of the teams 9 service aces.

GCU is back in action with two matches on Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium. The 'Lopes take on the Mustangs of Western New Mexico at 2:30 PM and will meet Bentley College (MA) at 7:30 P.M.
