Carson, CA -- In the final regular season home game, Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Francisco Corona (Paramount, CA/Compton HS) put a personal exclamation point on “Senior Day” by scoring both goals to lead CSUDH to a 2-0 win over visiting CSULA at Toro Stadium.
With his four points, Corona broke the tie he held with head coach Joe Flanagan and former CCAA MVP Victor Guerrero entering the contest and established the Toros all-time career mark for points scored in a career, moving CSUDH to 14-3-2, 8-3-2 CCAA and dropping CSULA to 9-8-0, 6-7-0 CCAA in the process.
The two teams played evenly in the first 45-minute session, with the visitors actually enjoying a 7-4 advantage in shots. Both defenses, however, would take center stage as neither goalkeep had to make a save in the first half.
After intermission, however, the Toros would turn the offensive tables on their cross-town rivals with continual pressure, finally hitting paydirt at the 57:58 mark. Taking a feed from senior Jaret Minami (Torrance, CA/West Torrance HS), Greg Quinones (Lakewood, CA/Yavapai CC) sent a through ball to Corona, who split two Golden Eagle defenders. Collecting the pass in stride, Corona beat CSULA goalkeep Patrick Fry to the near post for a CSUDH 1-0 lead, establishing his name atop the CSUDH record books.
Corona would add to his legend at the 76:26 mark by taking a feed from Kei Kamara (Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger HS) and flicking his shot near post for a commanding 2-0 lead.
This victory nearly mirrored the two teams' earlier contest on October 4, as the Toros scored four second-half goals in the 4-0 victory in Los Angeles.
The Toros outshot the Golden Eagles 9-6 in the decisive second half, while supplying unrelenting pressure on Fry, who made six second-half saves. CSUDH goalie Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/Fountain Valley HS) again was solid in the net, making two saves in recording 7th shutout of the year.
CSUDH honored seniors Corona, Minami, Jason Koza (Whittier, CA/CS San Bernardino) and Edgar Guzman (Long Beach, CA/Wilson HS), who all played in their final regular season home contest as a Toro.
The Toros travel to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, October 29, looking to avenge a 1-0 loss they suffered at the hands of the Roadrunners last Wednesday. First kick is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
