CARSON, CA -- Senior defender Katie Roche (Costa Mesa/Costa Mesa HS) scored the game-winning goal with just 1:25 remaining in the second overtime period to give host Cal State Dominguez Hills a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday afternoon at Toro Stadium.
With the win CSUDH elevates to 9-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in CCAA play, while Cal Poly Pomona falls to 4-8-2 and 3-4-2 in league action.
Chiharu Uchimura put CPP on the board in the 24th minute on a loose ball in front of the goal. Uchimura collected and slipped past diving Toro goalie Lisa Agramonte (Lakewood/Mayfair HS) for a 1-0 lead.
Cal Poly Pomona withstood several Cal State Dominguez Hills scoring attacks who outshot the Broncos 29-7 in the match. But sophomore forward Corrie Hirokawa (Torrance/No. Torrance HS) leveled the game with just 1:09 remaining in regulation to send the contest into overtime. Hirokawa stole the ball inside the penalty box, dribbled and rocketed her shot to the upper near post for the equalizer.
After a scoreless first overtime period, and nearly a second, Roche came up big with her third goal of the season and her first game-winner. Roche took a short cross inside the box from Rachele McDonald (Ventura/Buena HS) and lofted her shot to the upper far post for the golden goal in the 109th minute.
Lisa Agramonte made two saves in the game to earn the win. Vanessa Richardson took the loss while having to make 10 saves.
Cal State Dominguez Hills travels up north to take on San Francisco State on Friday. First kick is slated for 3 PM.
