The 2023 Cal State Dominguez Hills track & field season marked the 15th for assistant coach Carl Allen. Since joining the Toros, Allen has coached numerous CCAA champions, six All-Americans and one NCAA national champion.
Toward the end of his running career, Allen began coaching at Lakewood High School and won a couple of league titles in cross country and track & field. He also coached at Thomas Jefferson High School where he had a number of league, city and state qualifiers. It caught CSUDH track & field head coach Warren Edmonson's eyes and was subsequently recruited to become the Toro assistant coach.
Allen stared his running career early in life, running everything from the 100-meter dash to the marathon. In high school, he went undefeated in his senior cross country and track seasons. He found his race the 5000-meter run in college, where he went on to compete in the Olympic Trials in 1984.
“Track and field is like a bank account, you get out what you put in,” Allen says.
