Jennifer Winkelspecht Award Nominees

Cal State Dominguez Hills Athletics is excited to announce the continuation of our annual student-athlete end-of-the-year awards, featuring the Jennifer Winkelspecht, Mike Sharp Most Inspirational, Male and Female Athlete of the Year and the Presidential awards. Throughout the month of June we will introduce the nominees for each award and will announce all winners after. The head coach of each program nominated their student-athlete for each award.

The following awards will be announced:

June 8: Jennifer Winkelspecht Award

June 10: Mike Sharp Most Inspirational Award

June 15: Male Athlete of the Year

June 17: Female Athlete of the Year

June 22: Presidential Award

June 24: Winners Announced

JENNIFER WINKELSPECHT AWARD NOMINEES

 

The Winkelspecht Award, named after former volleyball student-athlete Jennifer Winkelspecht who passed away before the 1995 season, is given to the Toro who most exemplifies great personal character, has had their achievement recognized by the student-athlete educators and peers, excels in their role on the team, and displays this character beyond the field and classroom.

Women's Soccer Sophomore

  • With the help of her instructors, she was guided from an average student to a student that excels.
  • Highly respected by her peers because of her work ethic and leadership.
  • Always the first to volunteer for community service and on campus events. 
  • Started all 18 matches and logged in 1,651 minutes. She helped the program reach the CCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years.
Vanessa is a high achiever. When she wants something she will work to achieve it. She is one of our most consistent players. I want players like Vanessa on my team forever.

Nick Henry

Baseball Junior

  • 3.87 GPA
  • Volunteers at youth baseball camps, Little League, swim meets and communal gym events.
  • Earned gold status (3.5-4.0 grade-point average) on the Cardinal & Gold Wall during the fall semester.
  • Started 20 of 22 games in the spring, owning a .305 batting average with a CCAA-leading 6 home runs and 24 RBI.

Jessica Lane

Softball Senior

  • Excelled in the classroom and is highly spoken of from her professors. Earned a gold plaque on the Cardinal & Gold Wall for having a 4.0 during the fall semester.
  • Always led by example, both on and off the field.
  • The first student-athlete on the program to volunteer for community service and other miscellaneous tasks asked by her coaches.
  • Plans on going into the medical field after completing her Master's Degree at CSUDH.
  • Played in every game during the spring, having led the Toros in batting average and went 10-for-12 in the stolen base column.
Jessica always shows up and ready to take on the day with a great attitude and always greets us with a big smile and hello. She is kind, polite and comes from a very supportive family. She has expressed her gratitude to our program over and over again.

Kenadi Mitchell

Volleyball Junior

  • Served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • Earned cardinal status (3.0-3.49 grade-point average) on the Cardinal & Gold Wall.
  • Volunteers with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) in Los Angeles, Midnight Mission and the Ronald McDonald House in Long Beach.
  • One of the captains of the volleyball program.
  • Played in 75 sets during the season, having finished third on the team with 114 kills and 39 total blocks.

Women's Basketball

  • Committed and eager to help the next person.
  • Recognized by her peers, mostly classmates and teammates, as someone they can 'go to.'
  • As team captain, she made it her jobto bring and keep the team together. She took responsibility for the off-court growth and dove into the role.
  • Finished the fall semester with a perfect 4.0 to earn a gold plaque on the Cardinal & Gold Academic Wall.
  • Started all but two of the 27 games played this season, averaging 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Jasmine is an all-in type of student-athlete. Once she makes her mind up she is not only going to get something done, but with the most thought-out plan possible. Jasmine is committed, eager to help the next person, and has done everything asked of her and then some.

Chelsea Sinclair

Cheer Sophomore

  • Captained the cheerleading program and has lead with grace, style and sternness.
  • Is an inspiration to her teammates.
  • Shares the story of a tumbling injury she had in high school as a motivation to never give up to her teammates.
  • When others wanted to give up on competing this season, she was instrumental in reminding them of the goal they set at the beginning of the season and how Toros do not quit.
  • Aspires to become a nurse.
  • Has performed on the sidelines at every athletics home event.

Chelsea inspires those around her to try harder and set goals of accomplishing new skills. She demands a lot of herself as well as those around her. She became team captain during her sophomore year and there was no better person to give this responsibility to because she led with grace, style and sternness.

Men's Basketball Senior

  • As a team captain, he always has his teammates best interest in mind when leading.
  • Recognized by his church and teammates on a daily basis
  • Shows character everyday with everyone he interacts with.
  • A member of the All-CCAA Second Team, he has started all but one of 29 games. Finished 11th in the CCAA in scoring (14.5/game) and was the team's top rebounder, averaging 6.7 per game. He also led the team in steals (51) and finished second in assists with 114.
Wonder is a leader. He is a faith-driven respected worker who always has his teammates' best interest in mind when leading.
