IRVINE -- Newcomer Tayler Champion scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor as the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team handed Concordia an 80-69 loss in its regular season opener, while the contest counted as an exhibition for CSUDH.

The Toros took control in the first half, taking a 40-27 lead into the locker room in front of an announced crowd of 200, with the largest first-half lead reaching 18 on three occasions, the last time coming on a pair of foul shots by Ashanti Sweezer.

Size mattered as CSUDH scored 22 points in the paint, compared to just 14 for the Eagles.

After the break, the Toro lead reached as much as 19 on a Champion bucket, and remained as much as 18 on a pair of Amber Wharton freebies with 5:35 left, before the hosts cut the lead to single digits down the stretch before the 80-69 final.

The Toros shot 45.3% from the floor and 73.1% from the foul line, led by Wharton's 7-of-8 performance from the charity stripe.

Shomari McCorkle added 14 points in the win, with a trio of Toros coming within a point of double-figure scoring.

CSUDH will continue its exhibition ledger on November 1, at Cal State Fullerton, with first tip set for 7 pm.
