Carlos Leyva Named Honorable Mention All-American by NCBWA

Senior Carlos Leyva earned his fourth career All-American honor
SLIPPERY ROCK, Penn. -- Senior All-American Carlos Leyva was announced as a 2011 NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American, as voted upon by members of the National Collegeiate Baseball Writers Association, marking the fourth such honor in his stellar four-year career in Carson.

One of the team captains, Leyva established the CCAA and school record for career runs scored, currently at 198.  He also owns the school record for most All-region honors with eight, including three 1st-team honors this season.

Leyva overcame many obstacles en route to completing his four-year career.  While prepping at the California Academy of Mathematics and Sciences on the CSUDH campus, the four-year starter was unable to play organized baseball due to CAMS not fielding a team, and originally was cut from the CSUDH baseball team after trying out as a freshman.

His resiliency, however, earned him a spot as a starter for the next four years, and earned him the
Mike Sharp Most Inspirational Award at the 2010-11 Student-Athlete banquet for his persistence and hard work against tough odds.

This season, Leyva ranked in the top three on the team in most offensive categories while standing on top in runs and stolen bases.  He was also named a 1st-Team All-CCAA selection for the third year in a row this past season.

Leyva, along with teammate Kevin Pillar, is still eligible for more All-America honors as the ABCA will announce its All-Americas in the coming weeks.
