Men's Hoops Continues Climb up NABC Poll, Now at No. 7

Senior Zareh Zargaryan, whose 21 points against defending NCAA National Champion is the team's individual high thus far, has helped CSUDH make lots of history this year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Having established a program record with 11 wins in its first 12 games and benefiting from four of last week's top 10 ranked teams suffering losses, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team made a jump to No. 7 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches poll from No. 10, its highest position since the Toros were ranked No. 5 in 1981.

CSUDH is led by senior Michael Coxwho headlines a senior-laden squad that has three players averaging at least 10 points per game, and two others who come in at 9.0 points or better per contest.  Cox, who's at 14.8 points and 7.4 boards a contest, has shot 58.2% from the field, also chipping in 9 blocks, 7 assists and 4 steals thus far.

Point guard Marcquintice Davis follows with his 12.3 ppg average, also boasting  +23 in the assist:turnover stat, a key reason why CSUDH has stormed out to its 11-1 and 7-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) ledger.

Fellow senior Zareh Zargaryan (pictured) completes the double-figure scorers with his 10.1 ppg average, while junior Robert Willhite at 9.4 and senior Tim McLaurin at 9.0 round out the balanced Toro attack.

Former top-ranked Findlay's loss over the weekend moved the highest-scoring team in NCAA Division II to the top of the poll as West Liberty, which averages 122.6 points per game, takes over the top spot in this week's rankings after receiving all eight first-place votes.

The Hilltoppers are one of five undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division II, with nine schools, including CSUDH, boasting just one loss.

Fellow west region school Central Washington remained at No. 17, with Alaska-Anchorage debuting at No. 25.

Humboldt State, with whom the Toros are tied atop the CCAA standings, was the top team listed in the "receiving votes" category.  The Toros and Lumberjacks hook up on Saturday, January 22, in Carson, for the first of two regular season meetings, and possibly four overall battles including the CCAA and NCAA postseason tournaments.

CSUDH, tied with HSU and one game ahead of cross-town rival Cal State L.A., resumes CCAA action on the road this week, beginning with a Thursday night contest at Cal State East Bay, which is looking for its first conference win of the season.
