NCAA 2009 Finalists and No. 4-Ranked Toros Picked to Finish Third in CCAA

The 2009 NCAA FInalists were picked to finish third in this year's CCAA Tournament.
WALNUT CREEK -- Returning all 11 starters from last season's NCAA runners-up squad, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team was picked to win the South Division but finish third in the CCAA Tournament behind reigning CCAA Champion Cal State L.A. and perennial power UC San Diego after a preseason poll amongst the league's head coaches, it was announced today.

The Toros, who made their fourth overall appearance in the NCAA Final Four and finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2009, are led by the junior All-America duo in forward Jessica Murphy and defender Paige Peel, as well as two-time All-CCAA selection in senior keeper Alyssa Congdon.

Murphy claimed an NSCAA 2nd-team All-America nod last season after leading the league in goals, finishing 2nd in points, 4th in GWG and 8th in assists, and now holds four All-Region and two All-CCAA honors under her belt heading into her third season in Carson.

Peel earned Daktronics Honorable Mention All-America honors as a lockdown defender who helped CSUDH post 10 shutouts and 10 games with just one goal allowed after starting all 28 games for the NCAA runners-up.

Congdon, meanwhile, led the CCAA in saves and shutouts last season, also placing 8th in GAA and 9th in save percentage.  She also holds the 3rd, 6th and 10th places for wins and the 3rd position for shutouts in the CSUDH records books, both in a single season.

CSUDH, the defending NCAA West Region Champion and ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA preseason poll, received six votes to take the CCAA's South Division, with CSULA taking home four votes and UC San Diego receiving two.

Chico State was the decided choice to take the North Division, taking eight votes compared to Sonoma State's four.

CSULA and UCSD both received four votes as the league coaches' pick to take home the CCAA Tournament crown, with the Toros getting three votes, and Chico State one.

CSUDH and CSULA tied for the top vote-getters for reaching the CCAA Tournament with 11, with UCSD and CSUC tallying nine each to fill the final two spots.

Officially beginning practice Monday, the Toros kick off their 2010 season on Thursday, September 2, at home against Concordia, with first kick set for a 7:00 pm start in Toro Stadium, at the Home Depot Center's Track & Field Facility.
