Toros Post Fifth-Highest Program Finish in Year-End Learfield Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Debuting at No. 12 after the women's soccer team placed an NCAA runner-up finish and the men's soccer team reached the NCAA quarterfinals, Cal State Dominguez Hills finished the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup at No. 83 of 233 schools that qualified, the fifth-highest overall finish in the history of its athletics program.

"I am really proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes and our coaches," beamed CSUDH Director of Athletics #Patrick Guillen#.  "We continue to do more with less and that is a tribute to the dedication and passion of our students, staff and coaches.  I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work with, and I congratulate them all for this achievement."

Momentum started in the fall with both the men's and women's soccer teams reaching the postseason, with the women falling by a 1-0 count in the championship match after advancing past top-seeded West Florida in a thrilling PK national semifinal, while the men reached the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to national nemesis and eventual champion in top-seeded Fort Lewis University.

The winter season witnessed CCAA postseason berths for both women's and men's basketball, while the spring season saw the baseball team host its second-ever NCAA West Regional, followed by the track and field squad posting four All-America awards courtesy of its relay team.

Overall, six of CSUDH's 11 sports qualified for the NCAA postseason, with a record 16 All-America honors earned by the Toros, and four CCAA Newcomer of the Year awards.

UC San Diego (No. 8), Chico State (No. 12), Seattle Pacific (No. 24), Hawai'i Pacific (No. 49), Cal State L.A. (No. 60), Sonoma State (No. 64) and Grand Canyon (No. 76) were the top West Region schools included, with BYU-Hawai'i (No. 86) and Alaska Fairbanks (No. 98) following closest behind the Toros.

The No. 83 finish marks the fifth-highest rung on the Directors' Cup ladder the Toros have reached, following a No. 46 finish last year, a No. 67 finish in 2005-06, a No. 69 finish in 2001-02, and a No. 81 finish in 2004-05, and is just the seventh time the Toros have broken the top 100 since the Cup's inception in 1995-96.
