Toros Selected to Host NCAA West Region Baseball Tournament For First Time

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Toro baseball moms got the wish they were looking for as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has spoken and for the first time ever the NCAA West Region Tournament will be hosted by No. 2 seed California State University, Dominguez Hills at the MLB's Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) will be represented well as the top three teams in the tournament all hail from California, led by No. 1 seed and 2010 CCAA Baseball Tournament Champion UC San Diego (48-7). After nabbing the runner-up position in the CCAA Baseball Tournament Cal State Dominguez Hills (40-18) grabs the No. 2 seed while Chico State (35-18) rounds out the top three.

After a 27-10 run through the Pacific West Conference, Hawai'i Pacific University (37-10) clocks in as the No. 4 seed, riding a nine-game win-streak into the regional.

The defending West Region Champion UCSD Tritons will face off against the HPU Sea Warriors in game one at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 13, to start tournament action.

The Tritons are led by CCAA Most Valuable Player of the Year Brandon Gregorich and Most Valuable Pitcher of the Year Matt Rossman while the Sea Warriors will look to Blake Amaral to lead at the dish and Michael Greene to provide an immediate threat on the mound.

Game two of opening day will feature the CSUDH Toros in their second straight regional appearance taking on the CSUC Wildcats with first pitch at 6:00pm.

Leading the Toros will be eight All-CCAA selections including the CCAA's Newcomer of the Year, Abel Medina.  First-Team All-CCAA selection Bret Montgomery will most likely take the hill in the Toros' opening game as the Toros look to grab an early win over the Wildcats, who feature six All-CCAA selections including
First-Team power-hitter Jackson Evans and hurler Michael Gleason.

The double-elimination tournament will begin on Thursday, May 13, and run through Saturday, May 15, unless a tie-breaker championship game is needed on Sunday, May 16.

The winner of the tournament will pack their bags for the 2010 NCAA Division II Baseball College World Series in Cary, North Carolina on May 22-29.
