Angel and McEwen Eligible for All-Americas With NFCA 1st-team All-Region Selections

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The slugging duo of senior Amber Angel (right) and sophomore Emiley McEwen added more post-season hardware to their respective resumes with National Fastpitch Coaches Association 1st-team All-Region honors, it was announced earlier by the NFCA.  With these selections, both now are eligible for All-America honors, to be announced later this month.

McEwen, who was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Player of the Year, earned her first NFCA 1st-team honor after being tabbed a Daktronics 2nd-team selection last week, while Angel, who also was named a Daktronics 2nd-team All-Region selection, followed her teammate's lead with the second All-Region honor of her career.

From Anaheim Hills, McEwen claimed the program's second-ever CCAA MVP award and first since 2005, starting all 54 games at shortstop en route to 1st-team All-CCAA and CCAA Player of the Week honors.  She led the NCAA in sacrifice flies and was 37th RBI per game, while establishing the CSUDH records for home runs and sacrifice flies both in a season and a career.

McEwen also led the CCAA in RBI and sacrifice flies, was second in home runs, 5th in slugging percentage, 9th in hits and 10th in batting average, while enjoying 18 multi-hit and 15 multi-RBI contests.

Angel, meanwhile, earned her first All-Region accolade after earning her first 1st-team All-CCAA selection and starting all 54 games at first base.  Also earning one CCAA Player of the Week award, she was 5th in the CCAA in on-base percentage, home runs and walks, and 6th in slugging percentage and RBI.

The Los Angeles native has enjoyed
16 multi-hit and 11 multi-RBI contests, including one 4-RBI effort vs No. 19 Sonoma State in opening round of CCAA Tournament, en route to leading the team in walks, finishing 2nd in home runs, RBI and doubles, and 3rd in batting average and hits.

Angel was given a free pass at least twice in six different contests, including 2 games with three walks apiece.

CSUDH was the only CCAA school to place two players on the 1st-team, and accounted for two of the seven total CCAA players selected on either the first or second team.

The 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America teams will be announced at the 2010 NCAA Banquet of Champions at the Fulkerson Center on the campus of Missouri Western University in St. Joseph, Mo., on Wednesday night, May 26
.

The Toros, who finished the 2010 campaign at 33-21, 23-13 CCAA, return McEwen and two sophomore pitchers in 2011, looking to earn a spot in the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2008.
