Pillar and Medina Sweep 1st-Teams to Lead Toros' 17 All-West Region Selections

Kevin Pillar (L) and Abel Medina led the Toros' All-West Region selections as the only two to be named 1st-team in all three votes
CARSON -- Led by Kevin Pillar (left) and Abel Medina, both of whom swept all three All-West Region votes as 1st-team selections, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team landed an unprecedented 17 players across the Daktronics/NCAA, National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) and Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) selection lists.

After a three-game run into the NCAA West Region tournament and a 'winner-take-all' shot in the final game of the CCAA Championship Tournament, the Toros not only grabbed 17 All-West Region selections but landed four ABCA Gold Glove selections, highlighting their record setting season.

As the only two Toros to grab a 1st-team bid on each chart, Pillar and Medina landed their first-ever regional awards, highlighting Pillar's NCAA Division II all-time consecutive game hit-streak of 54 games and Medina's team-high .394 average.

Both Pillar and Medina were named 1st-Team All-CCAA selections as well, with Medina grabbing Newcomer of the Year honors and Pillar being named the Toros' only Wilson/CCAA Player of the Week in 2010.

Pillar led his team in at-bats (240), hits (91) and doubles (22) while Medina clocked in as the team leader in average (.394), home runs (13) and RBIs (64).

As possibly the best closer in the West, Matt Phillips grabbed two 1st-team selections for himself, on the NCAA and ABCA teams, while also being named a second team-selection in the NCBWA.

Phillips finished the season with an 8-1 record, 10 saves and a 4.83 ERA in 28 appearances, all while fanning 53 batters in 41.0 frames.

After finishing the season with the third-highest fielding percentage in the nation (.972) and the most overall double-plays (66), the Toros' fielding antics did not go unnoticed with Medina, Carlos Leyva and Steve Carrillo being named to the Rawlings/ABCA Gold Glove team at their respective third, second and first base positions.

Combined, the trio was .982 in the field, committing a scant 19 errors in 1,057 chances.

Pillar represented his squad from the far grass, grabbing gold glove honors in center field after going perfect in his 134 chances.  Pillar would also turn two double plays throughout the season.

Other All-West Region selections include Leyva (3x), Kyle Pond (2x), Bret Montgomery (2x) and
Carrillo (1x).

All ten 1st-team selections will now be eligible for All-American status with Leyva the only one eligible for back-to-back All-American awards after being named an NCAA and NCBWA honorable mention selection in 2009.
