Toros to Say Good-Bye to 26 Graduating Student-Athletes

Carson, CA -- Building on its overall athletic success of the 2009-10 academic year, the Cal State Dominguez Hills athletic department is no stranger to academic success as well with 26 student-athletes set to turn their tassel from right to left as they receive their degree from CSUDH on Friday, May 21.

“Graduation day is the most fulfilling day of the entire year as we get to watch our student-athletes' hard work and determination in the classroom rewarded as they walk across the platform, shake the President's hand and receive their diploma,” states CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.

Of the 24 student-athlete graduates this year, seven competed in the 2009-10 academic year while 9 competed for a total of four years in the Cardinal & Gold.

As the only graduate of the group to receive a Masters in Education, Cedric Gilmore will see an end to a journey in Carson that began in 1996, his first year as a Toro in the baseball program.

After a season-ending injury in '96, Gilmore rebounded on the field to make his return in 2001 before graduating in the spring of 2002 with a Bachelors of Arts in Physical Education.  Since then, Gilmore has put in five years as an assistant coach for the Toros and caps his long career at CSUDH with his graduate degree.

With the graduating student-athletes accounting for much success on the field and on the court, they also earned much success in the classroom as 15 of the graduates were named to the CSUDH Academic Honor Roll at some point in their career, highlighted by four-year athletes Jessica Marlow (softball) and Kristen Boskovich (women's soccer), who have been named to the honor roll every semester
since coming to CSUDH.

Another standout is Jonathan Toliver, head coach Damaine Powell's first-ever freshman recruit in 2005.  Toliver had an illustrious four-year career as a Toro that ended in 2009, before joining Powell as an assistant coach last season.

“We pride ourselves that our athletes are students first and matriculation in our program is an expectation," concludes Guillen. "We know that the life skills they learned while practicing, competing and being part of a team is what will help them excel in the future. I am confident that CSUDH and our coaching staff have done a wonderful job in preparing our fine young men and women to go out and be successful in all of their future endeavors.

"Congratulations and remember … once a Toro, always a Toro!”
