WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior outfielder Katie Garcia (L) has been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 1-7, while freshman teammate Lauren Harper was named the Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Monday by the CCAA Office.
Garcia, a senior from Riverside, was perfect during her opening weekend of play at the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational. In two games against Davis & Elkins and Central Washington, Garcia reached base in all six of her plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. She also reached base twice via a hit-by-pitch.
Harper, a freshman from San Diego, made an impressive collegiate debut as she went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two outings in the rain-shortened Mizuno Best of the West Invitational. In two appearances against Davis & Elkins and Central Washington, she logged 10.0 innings, allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out eight.
In her first career appearance, Harper pitched three innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two against Davis & Elkins. She followed that outing with a complete-game win versus Central Washington after working seven innings, surrendering seven hits, three walks and striking out six.
This is the first Player/Pitcher of the Week award for both Garcia and Harper.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0 to start the season, returns to action on Friday when it hosts Humboldt State in both teams' CCAA opener.
