Mizuno Best of the West Tournament Canceled

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Due to more downfall in the Turlock area, the Mizuno Best of the West Tournament has been canceled.

The tournament was scheduled to resume on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. after Saturday's cancellation.  Crews worked on the field all day Saturday and had them ready for play early Sunday to resume the tournament.

After delaying the start on Sunday for an hour, many teams opted to hit the road to return home.  Tournament officials, umpires, grounds crew and coaches deemed that fields would be unsafe to play on.

Eleven games of the 35 tournament games were completed on Friday with Grand Canyon, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State all going 2-0.  No tournament winner will be declared.

Senior Katie Garcia led the Toros offensively after going a perfect 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and one RBI during Friday's two games, stealing 2-of-3 bases while slugging an impressive 1.250.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Harper (pictured), meanwhile, picked up two wins in her Toro debut, scattering 8 hits in two shutout wins.  Opponents hit .235 against her while her strikeout-to-walk ratio was a solid 2:1.

The Toros, 2-0 to begin 2010, will open their homestand this weekend as perennial power Humboldt State visits Toro Diamond for two league twinbills on Friday (1:00 pm) and Saturday (11:00 am), followed by a non-conference single game on Sunday, beginning at 10:00 am.
