Montgomery Clinches Second Wilson/CCAA Pitcher of the Week Nod

WALNUT CREEK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills right-hander Bret Montgomery has been named Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 8-14, it was announced on Monday.

Montgomery, a senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., made Toros baseball history during the week as he became the first Toros' hurler to toss a no-hitter in 10 years when he accomplished the feat against Cal State L.A. on Saturday.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Montgomery held the Golden Eagles hitless for seven innings while walking three and striking out five.

Montgomery concluded the week with a 1-1 record and 0.90 ERA in two starts. He made a start on Monday against Concordia University-Irvine and suffered the loss after pitching three innings, surrendering two hits, two runs (one earned), walking one and striking out two.

The award is the second in Montgomery's career, the Toros last earned a Pitcher of the Week nod in 2008 coming from Montgomery himself as he held the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona scoreless on March 8, 2008, in seven innings of action while allowing only two hits and fanning four batters.

Montgomery is now the second Toro hurler to earn the award two-times in his career, Kevin Halamicek earned the award twice in 2001 and once in 2000 to hold current top honors.  Halamicek was also the last Toro pitcher to throw a no-hitter prior to Montgomery with Halamicek's coming way of an 8-0 victory over Cal Baptist University on February 11, 2000.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is next in action on Friday when it begins a four-game CCAA series against San Francisco State in Carson.

Wilson/CCAA Pitcher of the Week:

Feb. 1-7: Daniel Simmons (UC San Diego); Feb. 8-14: Bret Montgomery (Cal State Dominguez Hills).
