Toros Volleyball Aces in the Classroom, Honored With AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Just in time for the 2009 season, the 2008 Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team was awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for their success in the classroom as student-athletes in the past spring and fall semesters. This marks the first time in the awards ten-year history that the Toros have won.

Just after placing six of its athletes on the CCAA's All-Academic team, the second most of CSUDH's teams, the Toros volleyball squad is the only CCAA school to make an appearance on the AVCA academic award.

Leading the way was 2008 Presidential Scholar recipient #Heather Rushton# who tallied a 4.00 GPA in the 2009-10 year, the team's highest. Close behind her was #Ashley Clark# with a 3.85 across the fall and spring semesters.

"I'm very proud of our student-athletes and their dedication in the classroom this year", says volleyball head coach #Scott Davenport#. "The amount of time and commitment it takes in order to maintain the schedule of a student-athlete is sometimes difficult to manage and can sometimes manifest itself on the academic side."

Overall the team boasted a 3.39 GPA, the highest in the volleyball programs history.

A proud Davenport closes, "The fact that this is the first time that our program has ever received this award and that we've registered the highest GPA in the volleyball program's history says a lot about the type of character kids we have on our team."

The AVCA Team Academic Award honors volleyball teams at the high school and college level that are successful in the classroom. Nominees include high school or college teams that have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 (on a 4.00 scale) or 4.10 (on a 5.00 scale) during the full academic year (both semesters or all quarters), and include all varsity athletes who competed in volleyball with the institution for any portion of the academic year.
