Defending National Champion Toros Top 2009 CCAA Men's Soccer Coaches Poll

The National Champions begin defense of their title at Grand Canyon on August 29
WALNUT CREEK - Defending NCAA national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills and defending CCAA Conference Champion Sonoma State have been selected to win their respective divisions in the upcoming 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season following a poll of league coaches, it was announced this afternoon.

The Toros and Chico State were the coaches' pick to claim the 2009 CCAA Tournament after receiving four votes apiece.  Cal State L.A. and Sonoma State garnered two votes apiece.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, led by NSCAA Player of the Year in defender Kevin Gallaugher and coming off its second national championship and third consecutive division title, was the near-unanimous coaches' pick to win the South Division after totaling 64 points and nine first-place votes.  The Toros ended 2008 with a 21-2-4 overall record, finishing the year ranked No. 1 in the final NSCAA/adidas poll after claiming the crown.

Cal State L.A. was second after totaling 56 points and two first-place votes. UC San Diego (44) was third and followed by Cal State San Bernardino (35), Cal Poly Pomona (31 and Cal State East Bay (16). Cal State San Bernardino received one first-place vote.

Defending division and CCAA Tournament champion Sonoma State was picked to win the North Division after receiving 63 points and eight first-place votes, with Chico State collecting 59 points and four first-place votes.  San Francisco State (39) was picked third, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Stanislaus tied for fourth with 26 points and Humboldt State (24) was fifth.

The 2009 season marks Cal State East Bay's debut into the CCAA. The Pioneers will not be eligible for postseason play until 2010.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Chico State and Sonoma State were selected to take part in the CCAA Tournament that will be held November 6-8 on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock.

The defending national champions kick off their season on the road at Grand Canyon University on August 29, before opening their home campaign on Tuesday, September 1, hosting Cal State San Marcos at 7:00 pm.
