CSUDH Student-Athletes Come Up Winners at 19th Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic

Seal Beach, CA – An overcast and cool day was no match for the excitement and fun-filled afternoon that stemmed from yesterday afternoon's 19th Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, an event that welcomed a sold out contingent of golfers at the prestigious Old Ranch Country Club, with all proceeds going to Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes.

The Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, which serves as CSUDH Athletics' major fundraiser, was presented by bp Carson Refinery for the third-consecutive year, and featured CSUDH baseball head coach #Murphy Su'a# as the spirited auctioneer for the live auction that closed the evening.

“This year's golf tournament was a huge success, and I would like to thank all of our sponsors and participants for making it a wonderful day that will benefit student-athlete scholarships," begins #Patrick Guillen#, CSUDH Director of Athletics.

"I would especially like to thank our Presenting Sponsor British Petroleum Carson Refinery for their continued and generous support of student success at Cal State Dominguez Hills, as well as to our fantastic athletics department staff and a fully-engaged golf committee that worked so hard to pull off a first-class event.”

After the 11 am shotgun start kicked off the shamble format and golfers got their fill from boxed lunches, they were welcomed by Guillen after making their way into the ballroom once the day of golf ended, where an opportunity drawing, silent auction items and a buffet dinner awaited them.

With silent auction items such as VIP tickets to Coldplay at the Home Depot Center and an autographed John Wooden photo framed with his "Pyramid of Success" the first to be bid on, other packages such as a two-night stay at Deep Canyon, four 1-day Park Hopper passes to Disneyland and a "CSUDH Coaches Treasures Collection" featuring a bottle of wine contributed by each Toro coach as well as Guillen all required a good-natured bidding war.

Once the silent auction ended, baseball head coach-turned-auctioneer Su'a brought the excitement to a new level during the live auction as 5-night stays at both Lahaina Shores in Maui and at Mauna Lani Point in Hawai'i, as well as a golf outing with former UCLA men's basketball head coach Jim Harrick and the best seats in Dodger Stadium (on the field behind home plate) all became hot commodities towards the event's frenetic conclusion.

As for the round of golf, the team of Steve Roth, Ron Pagdanganan, Gorden Harder and Ed Medina claimed the lowest total gross score, with Linda Luft, Jim Torgerson and Richard Wilson's squad earning the lowest total net score.  The Tony Brown, Rudy Freeman, Rock Pillsbury and Ross Land quartet finished with the second lowest net score, with the Jim Geforos, Joe Courtis, Todd Mundorff and Mike Van Leeuwen foursome placing third.

Individually, Ron Pagdanganan took home the closest to the pin contest by driving his ball just 4'8" from the hole, with Dillon Bagel and Luft taking home the respective men's and women's longest drives.

This year's event again featured both the JetBlue Hole-In-One Challenge, which gave golfers four opportunities for four great JetBlue golfing vacation packages, as well as an opportunity to win a car, with the insurance sponsored by Shamrock Farms, and the vehicle courtesy of Power Dealers.

Pin-Up Golf, a company assisting with the overall fund-raising efforts of today's event, helped add to the tournament, selling mulligan packages and opportunity drawing tickets.

"It was a great day in general for Toros athletics," says CSUDH Marketing & Promotions Coordinator #Tiffany Edlin#, in her first year of putting together the silent/live auction portions.  "And I can't wait to help make it even better next year."
