Alia's MVP Nod Leads Six Toros Named to All-CCAA Teams

Jon Alia - the CCAA's best
Walnut Creek, CA -- Senior Jon Alia's season continues to get better after the California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball head coaches voted him the league's unanimous MVP, leading a total of six Toros named to All-CCAA squads, including four who earned first-team selections.

In addition to Alia's MVP and 1st-team honors, Carlos Leyva, Paul-Michael Klingsberg and Kody Kurowski joined "Big John" on the 1st-team, while outfielders Andrew Baslow and Kevin Pillar both were named to the All-CCAA's 2nd-team.

Alia, who earned a 3rd-team All-CCAA honor last year, enjoyed an outstanding conference season at the plate as he led the CCAA in average (.478), slugging percentage (.813), on-base percentage (.553), hits (64), RBI (46) and total bases (109).  For the season, the Toros' senior is batting a league-best .464 with 17 home runs, 22 doubles, 74 RBI and has an .861 slugging percentage, also ranking in the NCAA's top 30 in BA, hits, runs, RBI, doubles, HR and total bases.

Second baseman Leyva leads the CCAA in hits, runs and stolen bases, and sits 4th in batting average at .408, enjoying 28 multi-hit games, including five 4-hit efforts and a 16-game hitting streak during the year.

Klingsberg, who also doubles as the Toros closer with a team-best 6 saves, is 2nd in the league in doubles, 3rd in runs, 4th in hits and 10th in batting average, having belted 8 home runs while boasting 18 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI contests.

Kurowski, who emerged as the go-to when CSUDH's top two starters to begin the season were shelved during the campaign, boasts a team-best 7-3 record and a 2.89 ERA, good for 4th in the CCAA.  Kurowski has tossed 3 complete games in 81.0 innings pitched, also enjoying a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (60:20).

Baslow picked up his first All-CCAA honor after starting all 47 games played en route to a .345 batting average, 60 hits, 10 doubles, 5 home runs and 4 triples, while Pillar, who earned his second-consecutive 2nd-team nod, finished the regular season with a .321 batting average, 45 hits, 8 doubles and 2 long balls.
Known for their prowess in the outfield and at the plate, the duo also has combined for 29 swipes in 35 attempts, good for an 82.9 success rate.

Alia's MVP nod marks the first time since 2006 a Toro has been deemed the league's best, when Jason Klug completed one-third of the CSUDH trifecta (Player, Pitcher and Coach of the Year) before the Toros' only appearance in the CCAA Conference Tournament.

Winners of nine of their last 10 games, the Toros, currently at 34-19, 23-13 CCAA and holding steady as the No. 5 seed in the NCAA West Region, enter the CCAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed, and will take on top-seeded UC San Diego tomorrow at 3:00 pm to open the double-elimination tournament.
