Gallaugher Repeats as NSCAA Player of the Year; Marinez Also Earns NSCAA 1st-team Selections

Senior Kevin Gallaugher is a repeat NSCAA Player of the Year selection
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Although falling three wins short of claiming a second-consecutive NCAA Championship, Cal State Dominguez Hills senior defender Kevin Gallaugher was chosen as the Division II National Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for the second-consecutive year, while teammate Andrew Marinez joined Gallaugher as a 1st-team All-American.

With his second-consecutive Player of the Year honor, Gallaugher becomes the only Division II men's soccer player to win multiple POY honors since the award was first bestowed in 1996, and only the second D-II player to ever win multiple POY awards after Christian Brothers University's Missy Gregg claimed back-to-back women's soccer POY honors in 2001 and 2002.

Additionally, Gallaugher's award ties CSUDH with Southern Connecticut State's men's program with three award winners for the top D-II mark, the highest for any men's or women's program.

These back-to-back awards, the first since former Toro great Juan Carlos "JC" Bolanos received this honor after leading CSUDH to its 2000 NCAA Title, marks the most prestigious honor bestowed on Gallaugher after claiming 1st-team NSCAA All-America, 1st-team Daktronics All-America, 1st-team NSCAA All-Region, 1st-team Daktronics All-Region, CCAA MVP Defense, 1st team All-CCAA honors and NCAA West Region MVP - Defense.

"Being chosen as the National Player of the Year once is great and a huge honor, but to be voted as the Player of the Year twice is a huge accomplishment," begins CSUDH head coach Joe Flanagan.

"I thought he had a great second half of the season and really stepped it up when we went on our 12-game run.  He was a huge part of that as he's been throughout his three years at CSUDH, so congratulations to him."

The now six-time All-American, who again was the heart and soul of the Toro defense, was instrumental in shutting out 11 opponents and allowing just one goal in 10 other contests as he helped his keepers limit opposing offenses to a paltry .082 shot percentage and just 20 goals on the year, an average of just 0.78 goals scored per game.

Additionally, the Walnut native helped the offense with 6 goals scored on the year, the team's third-highest total, with 5 coming via penalty kick conversions.

Marinez, meanwhile, made his final of four years in Carson count, anchoring the Toros offense with 25 points, including a team-best 7 assists.  The Santa Monica native led CSUDH with 4 game-winning goals en route to 3rd-team Daktronics All-America and 1st-team All-CCAA awards, solidifying his stature as one of the best players to don the Cardinal and Gold for the men's soccer program with his multi-All-America honors.

As a result of this selection, Gallaugher and Marinez will be individually recognized at the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America luncheon held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, January 16, 2010.
