"Madness" Ushers in 2009-10 Toros Basketball Seasons

CARSON -- Nearly 3,000 fans helped officially welcome the start of the 2009-10 Cal State Dominguez Hills men's and women's basketball season as part of 2009's "Madness at Midnight," back from a one-year hiatus.

In her first year as CSUDH Marketing & Promotion Coordinator, Tiffany Edlin reintroduced the event, now in its third year, that saw a standing room only crowd at the end of the night.

The CSUDH Cheer and Dance Teams performed routines before the men's and women's teams rushed the gym, throwing out t-shirts to memorializing the event that fired up the crowd to a fever pitch.

Emceeing the event, Keyshia Cole introduced many different CSUDH clubs and organizations who performed step and dance routines dedicated to the Toro basketball programs.

After introductions of the coaches and players by long-time announcer and voice of the Toros Dennis Lien, the night segued into a fiery 3-point and dunk contests. Men's basketball's high-flyer Tim McGrath took a close finish in the 3-point contest over women's Kayla Montalvo, while also capturing the unforgettable slam-dunk contest with an array of aerial acrobatics, including suspending himself by his elbow after a monstrous jam that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

The final highlight of the night came in toward's the event's close as the dance and cheer teams performed to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," with "Teddy the Toro" taking center stage in the routine.

Sponsors of "Midnight at Madness" included AT&T Yellowpages, Schools Federal Credit Union, CSUDH Office of Student Life, CSUDH Associated Students Inc., Toro Productions and Mr. Mitch Maki, whose support and donations made the night a memorable one.

"I was thrilled with the event," begins Edlin, who herself donned the Cardinal & Gold as a two-year volleyball player for the Toros from 2006-07.  "We packed the house, had great attendance from much of the on-campus entities, and most of all, the basketball teams enjoyed themselves and we raised money for Make-A-Wish, which is what it was all about."

The Toros kick off their seasons next month with the men hosting Grand Canyon on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 pm, followed by the women's home and CCAA opener one day later against cross-town rival Cal State L.A., with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
