Toros Basketballs Picked to Finish 4th in Both Women's and Men's CCAA Preseason Polls

Barbara Houston (L) and Jamel Ward look to lead their teams back to the top of the CCAA mountain
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Coming off the 2008 CCAA Tournament championship for the women and a share of the 2008 CCAA regular season Championship for the men, both Cal State Dominguez Hills basketball teams were chosen to finish 4th in the 2009-10 CCAA Basketball Preseason Coaches Polls, released earlier by the California Collegiate Athletic Association office.

The women's squad, which received one first-place preseason vote, were picked to finish behind UC San Diego, which received 5 first place votes, Cal Poly Pomona (4) and Humboldt State (2).  Chico State was chosen to finish 5th, followed by Cal State San Bernardino, San Francisco State, Cal State Monterey Bay, Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State L.A. and CCAA-newcomer Cal State East Bay.

Led by 22nd-year head coach Van Girard, the Toros finished the 2008-09 campaign with a 21-10 overall and 13-7 CCAA ledger en route to the team's third CCAA Championship title and third NCAA West Region playoff berth in the past four years, before suffering a 66-65 heart-breaking buzzer-beating loss to UC San Diego in the NCAA's first round.

The men, who return just four players from last year's tri-championship squad, were tabbed to finish behind 2008 NCAA D-II national finalist Cal Poly Pomona, which received 6 first place votes, Humboldt State (5) and Cal State San Bernardino (1).  Cal State L.A. was tabbed to finish 5th, followed by UC San Diego, Sonoma State, Chico State, San Francisco State, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay.

Sixth-year head coach Damaine Powell is coming off a campaign in which last year's Toros tied the program record with 22 wins en route to an 1st-round win over Central Washington in the NCAA West region playoffs.

The 2009-10 campaign kicks off on Tuesday, November 17, as the men host Grand Canyon for a 7:00 pm first tip, followed by the women one day later as the Toros entertain Cal State L.A. at 5:30 pm for both their home and CCAA opener.
