Kansas City, KS -- Riding the wave of success that saw the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team capture its unprecedented 8th CCAA Championship and both men’s and women’s teams advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Far West Region playoffs, each squad was ranked in the top 25 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in its respective 2008 preseason poll, making the Toros the only CCAA school with both teams included in the balloting.
The Toro men, ranked 11th after compiling an 18-3-2 overall and 12-2-0 mark in CCAA Conference play, were joined by defending Far West Champion Sonoma State in 6th, while the 13th-ranked Toro women were joined by defending CCAA Champion Chico State at No. 24.
The men’s team, coming off back-to-back CCAA Titles, returns junior defender
Kevin Gallaugher
, who picked up both NSCAA and Daktronics All-America honors as well as 1st-team All-CCAA and CCAA Newcomer of the Year awards during his all-world sophomore season. Fellow junior forward
Mario Guerrero
returns with a Daktronics 2nd-team All-Region nod, spearheading 17 lettermen returning with at least one CCAA Title under their belts.
Senior forward
Yvonne Vasquez
highlights the returners on the women’s squad after earning 2nd-team NSCAA All-Region, 1st-team All-CCAA and CCAA Newcomer of the Year Awards, while fellow senior forward
Kelly Matosian
and sophomore keeper
Alyssa Congdon
each earned a 3rd-team All-CCAA honor as 12 returning players gear up for the 2008 season after compiling 14-5-4 overall and 8-3-3 CCAA marks in 2007.
Both teams kick off on Thursday, August 28, as former CCAA school Grand Canyon pays Carson a visit. First kick for the women is set for 4:30 pm, with the men following at 7:00 pm in Toro Stadium at the Track & Field Facility at The Home Depot Center.
