Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills has named Scott Davenport its volleyball head coach, CSUDH Athletics Director Patrick Guillen announced this morning. Davenport, who served as the interim head coach last season, begins his fifth season with the program after starting as a Toro assistant coach in 2004.
“I am pleased to remove the interim tag off of Coach Davenport’s title,” begins Guillen. “Despite a very tough year of transition and injuries in 2007, Scott showed that he not only has the necessary skills to lead our program, but even more importantly he proved that he is a good fit here at CSUDH. He has been involved in the program since 2004 and understands what it takes to be successful in our conference, and I am confident that he has the ability to lead our program back to respectability and also develop our student-athletes for future success off the court upon graduation.
"I will do everything in my power to make sure he has the proper resources to make this a reality.”
Born and raised in Rochester, NY, Davenport attended Genesee Community College where he led his squad to a league championship en route to earning MVP and all-league honors. After transferring to Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne, he helped the Mastodons earn an NCAA Division I semifinal berth, finishing 4th overall.
In 1995, Davenport moved to California in pursuit of a professional beach volleyball career, which began in 1997 and continues to this day. In 1999, Davenport played and served as team co-captain at the Pan American Games for Team USA, where he and his partner earned an international 7th-place finish.
Locally, Davenport founded Club Performance Volleyball, a small junior boys and girls volleyball club located in Palos Verdes, California. He was the head coach of the Palos Verdes Peninsula HS boys program from 2000-03, where he earned consecutive CIF Bay League Coach of the Year honors. Under his direction, a number of his players have earned Division I volleyball scholarships.
“I’m extremely honored to be given this opportunity,” begins Davenport about his new appointment. “Working with the CSUDH volleyball program over the past four years has been an excellent learning experience, and I've been fortunate to work with a number of great people, from the Athletics staff to the past and current players. Last year’s players laid a strong foundation for future players to learn from and try and emulate.
“I believe that our program is at a pivotal turning point and that, in due time, the volleyball program will live up to the high standard of success that our other Toro sports have been able to achieve,” he concludes. “I'm really excited about the direction that our program is headed in and can't wait to get started!
A CSUDH alumnus and resident of Redondo Beach, Davenport is married to Wendi Dearsman.
