Eighteenth Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic Scores a Hole-In-One for CSUDH Student-Athletes

Seal Beach, CA – Picture perfect weather provided an exquisite backdrop yesterday afternoon as the 18th Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic welcomed a nearly sold out contingent of golfers at the exquisite Old Ranch Country Club, with proceeds from the fundraiser making winners of present and future Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes.

The Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, which serves as one of two major fundraisers for the Toros athletics program, was presented by Bp Carson Refinery, and welcomed Walter Neil, the External Affairs Manager of British Petroleum - Carson Refinery, as its Honorary Chairman for the second-consecutive year, who served as a lively auctioneer for the live auction to close the evening

“This year's tournament was by far the best in the 18-year history of the event,” begins CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.  “We had great weather, a superb facility and a full field that made for a great success.”

After the 11 am shotgun start kicked off the shamble format and golfers got the fill from boxed lunches, they were welcomed by Guillen after making their way into the ballroom, where silent auction items and a buffet dinner awaited them.  With silent auction items such as golf outings at world famous Pebbel Beach and Makena Golf Course (Maui) the first to be bid on, others such as a golf package to the Costa Mesa Country Club, an original Victoria Wieck diamond bracelet and a Steve Garvey autographed bat and ball all required a good-natured bidding war.

Once the silent auction ended, chairman-turned-auctioneer Neil brought the excitement to a new level during the live auction as a one-year membership to Old Ranch Country Club, a “Four Night Royal Caribbean Cruise Vacation” and “Tickets to the 2009 NCAA D-I Men's Basketball Final Four” items all became hot commodities towards the event's conclusion.

After the afternoon of golf, the Double Pump team of Anthony Darby, Rudy Freeman, Ross Land and David Pump took home the day's lowest score and was followed by the DoubleTree quartet of Bess Cruz, Jason Cruz, Kim Sakata and Frankie Tran in second place, while the ensemble of Jay Cunningham, Matt Giamberdino, Brian O'Sullivan and Randy Yi finished third.  Giamberdino (“Heads or Tails”), Dave Nishioka (“Heads or Tails”), Cruz (Closest to the Pin Women), CSUDH volleyball head coach Scott Davenport (Closest to the Pin Men), Linda Luft (Longest Drive Women) and Nathan Reeves (Longest Drive Men) were this year's individual winners.

This year's event again featured both the JetBlue Hole-In-One Challenge, which gave golfers four opportunities for four great JetBlue golfing vacation packages, as well as Pin-Up Golf, a company assisting with the overall fund-raising efforts of today's event.

“I would like to thank all of our sponsors and participants that helped in making it a great day,” Guillen continued.  “Particularly, I would like to thank Walter Neil of British Petroleum for his continuing support as the Presenting Sponsor and also as the last-minute live auctioneer.  He did a great job and is a real friend of Toros Athletics.  I am not sure how we will top this next year, but I'm sure we'll find a way.”
