Carson, CA - Former Toro and six-time All-American Carmelita Jeter (Gardena, CA) is set to return to the Carson campus to take on the world’s best 100-meter sprinters at the adidas Track Classic on the Home Depot Track on Sunday, May 18.
Seven women ranked among the top 10 in the world - #1 Veronica Campbell-Brown, #2 Torri Edwards, #3 Carmelita Jeter, #5 Lisa Barber, #6 Allyson Felix, #7 Lauryn Williams, #9 Kerron Stewart - including the last three World champions, are expected to toe the starting line for what may be one of the best 100-meter races of the year before the Olympic finals.
Jeter, a dual local alumnus from Cal State Dominguez Hills (Kinesiology, ‘2004) and Bishop Montgomery High School in nearby Torrance, finished fourth in the race last year with a time of 11.05, just behind Edwards (10.90), Campbell-Brown (10.91) and Barber (10.95). This season, however, has seen Jeter make noise on the international scene, coming from seemingly nowhere to take the bronze at the 11th Annual International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Osaka, Japan, in August 2007.
At the World Championships Jeter got off to a rough start with a reaction time of 0.189, the slowest time in the field, but closed in on the leaders halfway through the race to finish in 11.02, an eyelash behind the winners, who both came in at 11.01.
Over her highly-decorated Toro track career, Jeter established all the all-time sprint marks, holding the school records in the outdoor 100 (11.43) and 200 (23.65), as well as the indoor 55 (7.04), 60 (7.50) and 200 (24.56).
Jeter’s Toro All-American accolades:
Outdoor
100m Dash (2000, 2002, 2003)
200m Dash (2003)
4 x 100, Rely (2002)
Indoor
60m Dash (2003)
